The History of Madison COmmunity VBS

"I love how churches from all different backgrounds come together for the purpose of spreading God’s love to the children in our community. I’ve been to children’s ministry conferences all over the country and other children’s ministers would love to do this in their city. I feel blessed to live in a community where people can serve together, despite theological differences."- Community VBS co-director Kelly Rector.

Our history of holding a community-wide Vacation Bible School here in Madison dates back over 55 years when First Baptist Church and Broadway Second Baptist Church partnered together to put on a VBS.  Several years later, First Christian Church, First Baptist Church, Trinity United Methodist, Madison Presbyterian Church, Prince of Peace, and Trinity United Methodist became the forerunners of the tradition of Community VBS.  Over the years, several different churches from Madison and Hanover of all different denominations, protestant to catholic, have pooled resources to make this event happen each year.

For many years, First Baptist Church provided the building space for the elementary age VBS children and First Christian Church provided building space for the preschoolers. Then, in 2011, God placed it on our VBS directors' hearts to move outside the church building walls and take VBS to Main Street. Our theme that year, appropriately enough, was "Inside Out and Upside Down on Main St." The opening and closing took place at the Ohio Theatre, while the other stations (crafts, lessons, games, etc.) took place in various downtown buildings and at Bicentenniel Park. Community VBS has met at different churches and public location in our community. This is the first year that we have held VBS at Pope John XXIII Elementary School.
